Archery Beginners Course

So, we've all seen Robin Hood on TV and it all looks pretty easy, shooting two or three arrows at once (in different directions), cutting ropes, shooting flaming arrows, well it's not quite like that in the real archery world. However, it can be just as much fun!

Archery falls into two many formats Target and Field, although by no means is that where it ends. Archery is an ancient art, and has been practiced for centuries, and is today a very diverse sport.

So, you reckon it looks easy, and you want to try it, then what are you waiting for!

Here at Andover Archers we hold (by arrangement) 'Have a Go Sessions' and through out the year three or four Beginners courses. It is very important to learn the correct shooting form right from the start. Experimenting yourself and having fun is great, and is exactly what most people would do. However, bad habits can be hard to get rid of once they become familiar.

Beginners Courses

Courses are run throughout the year, consisting of 6 two hour sessions, normally held in our indoor range on a Thursday evening between 7:00pm and 9:00pm. Courses may be held on a Saturday Morning From 10:00am to 12:00pm, depending on demand and the availability of coaching staff and our facilities.

The courses consist of:-

  • Equipment and how to use it safely
  • Basic techniques of shooting
  • How to shoot all types of bow ( Recurve, Long Bow and Compound), sorry no cross bows.
  • Scoring
  • Warm up exercises and why they are necessary
  • Etiquette

No equipment is required, the club will provide all that is required for the course.

No special clothing is required, but, lose/baggy fitting upper body garments should be avoided if possible. Courses held during the summer months are held outside if weather and light conditions permit. Otherwise courses are conducted in our indoor shooting facilities.

The Cost

The cost of the course is £50.00 (for both Adults and Juniors) for all the six lessons and covers the instruction given by our coaches, use of all necessary equipment and G.N.A.S. insurance cover.

On the final session you will be given all the information on how to join the club, club fee's and the cost of buying your own equipment, if you so wish.

Once you have successfully completed the course, you can apply for membership of the club. Unless you have previously belonged to an Archery club or can shown that you have successfully completed a beginners course, you will not be able to apply for membership of Andover Archers. Those joining from one of our beginners course and have paid for a full years membership will be given (free of charge) one of the new club T shirts, of their size. For more details of our club shirts, please see the Club Clothing.

Due to the popularity of Archery lately, we at Andover Archers can provide a 'Have-A-Go' session, prior to anyone wanting to book onto a beginners course. The session last for about half an hour to an hour, and cost £3.50 per person, or £10.00 for a family of four, regardless of age. Sessions are normally held on a Saturday afternoon, (by prior arrangement, and agreed by the Committee) around 3:00pm. Sessions can be provided of an evening if coaching staff are available, and subject to prior committee approval.

If you would like to come and 'Have-A-Go' then please contact us through the committee page of the site.
